How To Build a Shed

how to build a shed from start to finish

I want to build a backyard storage shed. What’s the best way to do it?

I’d like to build one with a concrete foundation. I’ve roofed, sawed and hammered as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer. I’ve also laid my own tile without major trouble. But I have only the most basic tools.

I’ve considered just buying a kit, but I’d like a shed with some personality, and I like the idea of creating something from scratch. I’ve browsed Amazon.com for shed book ideas, and there are plenty. "Barns, Sheds and Outbuildings: Plan, Design, Build" seems thorough. I’ll also visit my library before I decide whether to build on my own.

Is this a crazy idea? Please share your experiences and suggestions.

It’s always a good idea to reseach your project completely before you get involved. You may want to choose a design that doesn’t require building rafters yourself. My neighbor is currently building one from a kit that didn’t include the rafters (even though the store recommended one that did to save him the hassle) and he is right now, out there cursing a blue streak. He’s been working on it for a month now.
Just a suggestion!

that sounds cool. i am a do-it yourselfer myself, and there is nothing more satisfying than looking at something you built with your own hands. just keep looking, a lot of hardware stores offer tips and may have how-to books for sheds.

I built my daughters this summer,a playhouse which I also will turn into a shed when they get a bit older. I just made it from scratch in my own head. But if you go to your local hardware store they will be more than happy to help you out.

crazy idea? not at all, but you can get crazy with it. my friends dad (swiss) built a small chalet in the back yard. it was sweet. he could have gone four walls and a roof, but he put some personality into it. buy some dam tools. you can equip yourself pretty cheap if you do it right.

Not crazy at all. I too like to put my personal touches to my projects. I am always looking through books for ideas that I can also modify to my liking. Get creative ….it’s fun.

Before you do any thing that you would need a permit to build a shed on you lot, but you need to check with the cite.
I would get a kit for all the parts are cut to size, & all to have to do is hammer it to together. It may be cheaper to go that way with the kit.

If you live in the Midwest you can visit Menards. They have "EZ Build" sheds which consist of pre-fabricated frames which make the floor, sidewall and roof skeleton. The rest of the materials will have to be cut, so you should have a circular saw. The instructions tell you what dimensions to cut the material. The only other thing you will need is a hammer. Other Big Box retailers in your area may offer similar packages. Take their basics and your modifications and personalize it any way you want!
